THE BUZZ: This December is stacked with the sort of fare that could stand up to any summer blockbuster. THE BUZZ: Stephen Frears hasn't connected with audiences since The Queen, and his take on Beth Raymer's memoir doesn't look to improve on his recent track record, as festival reviews have sighed at the apparent lack of charm or spark. Rebecca Hall + Bruce Willis = no chemistry? Hard to imagine until you watch the initial trailer; between her baby-talk voice and his acting, which recalls The Whole Nine Yards, the best bet here might be to pass. Hopefully Frears will rebound with his Muhammad Ali project while his Freddie Mercury biopic starring Sacha Baron Cohen is about to get off the ground finally.

Beth, a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, falls in with Dink, a sports gambler who swoons for her as she proves to be something of a gambling prodigy, earning the initial ire of Dink's wife, Tulip.

THE BUZZ: Nearly every review I've encountered confirms my initial reaction to this plot outline: a good movie is hiding within the overworked and convoluted narrative. Looks like another case of a foreign director losing his way with an American production; in this case, it's Stefan Ruzowitzky, whose The Counterfeiters won the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

A thriller that follows two siblings who decide to fend for themselves in the wake of a botched casino heist, and their unlikely reunion during another family's Thanksgiving celebration.

THE BUZZ: And the point here is ... to reintroduce Gerard Butler as a virile leading man? Kudos to him for diversifying his roles, but we're always going to cringe when his opts for romantic comedies, especially when he teams up with heavy-handed director Gabriele Muccino (Seven Pounds, The Last Kiss). We smell atonement in the air for his character, too, since Butler's footie star comes from a questionable moral past.

THE BUZZ: Indie-horror stalwarts Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton offer up a sequel to their breakout hit The Collector as the duo begins to tackle more major-studio fare: they did some work on Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim; their screenplay Rise is set-up at Warner Bros.; and recently they've been tasked with rewrite work on Waterproof.
